In this image, this is the actual swim down and release. I wouldn't say that this moment was the actual target. But as Jill let go of the chiffon that had the leaves contained within, the scene just unfolded into a stunning renaissance informed moment. I think this might "the one" out of them all. Only the various interpretations of it that followed are to be found now. The 16th century painting is the source inspiration for this photo. Its artist is unknown. Taken November 2nd, 2025 Location: the cold waters of the Salish Sea, just off Owen Beach, Point Defiance, Tacoma, WA. No artificial light or scuba gear is used in these photos. (save for a light once….a thing with a disco ball, but that’s another story.) The concept for this image was all Jillian’s idea. Pillar Point/ Half Moon Bay, California. December 24th, 2024. If this wave means anything to you, then this date should too. The day before is when Alo Slebir rode one of, if not the, biggest wave ever surfed. The break was totally fogged in on that day (12/23/24) and only a very limited amount of highly experienced craft were even allowed out of the harbor. It was the biggest swell to hit Hawaii and California since the introduction of satellite meteorology. The swell continued on this day, as you can see. But the beat downs from the day prior left a lot of perfect monsters empty on the 24th. This beach is a personal favorite. The surf here is fickle, and for the most part, pretty gentle when it is. A nice sand floor that tapers gently. The bull kelp here in late summer/ early fall is spectacular. So are the tide pools both west and east of it. One of the things I love about this spot is the angle of the mid-day sun. In winter, it's a low arc on the horizon and it gets blocked by the mountains pretty early. Say what you will about Florida, I was taken by how kind everyone was at this local surf break. That's the Jacksonville Beach Pier in the background and there is some great longboard surfing to be had here. I spent a week shooting this break and got to meet a little bit of every kind of group who surfed here. I didn't meet a single bad egg. Sure, things were a little different on shore. That's pretty true around any beach. It was early December of 2021 on this trip and I was in board shorts and a rash guard, while all the locals were in full-on 3+mm wetsuits. "You are not from around here are you?" "Nope. In fact, just about as far from here as you can get on this part of the map. Late summer. The floor drops off quickly here. From ankle deep to almost 600 feet in a little more than a quarter mile. But where the suns rays penetrate the surface, the seasonal bull kelp makes its bid for success.
